About this Survey

An independent guide to the museums, history and coast of East Lothian.

East Lothian Heritage is an independent survey — a small, illustrated volume set down for the pleasure of understanding a place. It is not the county's official museums service and speaks for no institution; it is the work of outside observers who read a good county history the way others read a novel.

We keep to what can be walked to and looked at: the county's museums, its battles and burghs, its shore and its industry, arranged as papers and plates with a chronology at the back. Nothing here carries a date of publication — a well-told place does not expire.
