Bullnose brick

Bullnose bricks were amongst a number of standard patterns of bricks available continuously from stock at Prestongrange Brickworks; they were used on lintels or as decorative coping on walls. The majority of the works’ output in the 20th century was machine made.

This is a machine-made brick with a curved side (a bullnose). One face has a rectangular recess (a ‘frog’) with stamped text PRESTON GRANGE. A number of circular marks were made by the ’stamper plate’ in the brick mould.

Bricks were made at Prestongrange from the early nineteenth century. After 1872 the works were expanded and progressively mechanised and switched to using shale (blaes) and fireclay from the nearby colliery. By the nineteen fifties almost all of the colliery’s output was absorbed by the brickworks.
