Burgess Board from Haddington Parish Church

This board records the donation of a sum of money to be used to alleviate the plight of poor people in the town of Haddington. The board is one of a set once displayed in Haddington Parish Church; the Kirk Session had a role in administering such grants.

Black painted panel of two boards with gold text reading: EUPHAN GULLEN SPOUSE TO RODERICK PEDDISON IN EDR (Edinburgh) LEFT TO THE POOR 200 MERKS 7 DYED ANO 1716. The frame for this board is missing.

This board was erected to a the memory of a Haddington born woman who died in Edinburgh. She left 200 merks (a merk was a unit of account, not coin; one merk was 2/3 of one pound Scots. In 1716 this was worth 13 1/3 d Sterling).
