Burgess Board from Haddington Parish Church

This board records the donation of a sum of money to be used to alleviate the plight of poor people in the town of Haddington. The board is one of a set once displayed in Haddington Parish Church; the Kirk Session had a role in administering such grants.

Black painted panel of two boards secured in a wood frame. It is painted with gold text reading: WILLIAM WOOD SON TO ROBERT WOOD TAYLOR BURGESS OF HADDINGTON LEFT TO THE POOR IN THE TOUN OF HADINGTOUN 50 LB STR & DYED IN VIRGINIA ANO1733 AGED 45 YEARS.

This board was probably commissioned by the father of the donor to record his son’s gift. The father was a burgess, a full citizen of the burgh who had sworn to defend the burgh’s rights, and a tailor by profession. Note also that the donor died in America.
