Prestonpans soap works, c1900

This photograph was originally published as an advertisement for James Mellis and Company of Prestonpans. The subject is a shipment of the company’s products readied outside their soapworks.

This is a black and white printed photograph of both a steam lorry or wagon with a trailer and a horse drawn cart stationed at the side of an industrial building marked PRESTONPANS SOAPWORKS. Both outfits are loaded with boxes and casks.

Prestonpans Soapworks began in the early nineteenth century and was in business until after World War II. It traded for most of this period as James Mellis and Company. It was a comparatively small scale plant and was unable to compete with national and multinational manufacturers in the later part of the 20th century.
