453 Squadron at Drem

East Lothian’s three RAF airfields and their ‘eyes and ears’, a number of RADAR and watching stations, played a key role in Central Scotland’s air defences during 1939-45.

This black and white photograph shows the congregated members of 453 Squadron airmen at Drem. The men are pictured wearing their uniforms and many have life jackets on.

Although without a permanent airfield, three sites in East Lothian served as military stations during the 20th century - Macmerry, Drem and East Fortune. In addition at Satellite Landing Ground was operated at Lennoxlove .
