Sowing hopper
This basket was used to hold grain or similar seeds in readiness for hand-broadcasting in a prepared field; the baskets were hung round the neck so that users could work two-handed.
This basket or hopper is shaped for its function. The concave side with its supporting strap is designed to rest against the waist of the user, while the curved ends and outer edge provide easy access to lift handfuls of seed.
Hand sowing was practised in the Lothians until after World War II. The sowers often worked in teams of two and were followed by a harrow to cover in the dispersed seed.
