Haddingtonshire Rifle Volunteers, 1860s

This is a section of the 7th Corps or Company of Haddingtonshire Rifle Volunteers. They are displaying trophies, which they probably won in an inter-company shooting competition.

This is a sepia photograph printed on paper mounted on card. It shows a group of soldiers outside a building. There is an officer on the left and a senior NCO on the right, both with swords; the others all have long, muzzle-loading rifles.

Volunteer Companies were formed in East Lothian during an 1859 invasion panic. Grouped as an Administrative Battalion, they became 1st Haddingtonshire Rifle Volunteers (1880) and then 7th Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Scots (1888).
