Mak'Merry bowl
From the 1920s, the Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes provided a forum for education and self help for women isolated in communities distant from good transport links and urban centres. Craft work of all types was seen as a valuable means of self expression, which held out the possibility of remunerative employment.
This is a shallow oval bowl, its edges have a yellow wash and rows of brown dashes on top of a white background. The centre of the bowl has a white glaze and a sprig of autumn fruits decorates one edge. ‘M A’ is marked on its base.
‘Mak Merry’ ware arose from a co-operative trading effort of the Scottish Women’s Rural Institute at Macmerry during the later part of World War One. Workshops led by Catherine Blair and a Mrs Clarke were organised during the 1920s, of which decorated ceramics may be the most lasting legacy.
