Children and toys

The children of middle and upper class Victorian families had a privileged position: few children of the time could expect as many toys or as good clothes as this boy and girl had. The photograph was taken outdoors to ensure good light and a reasonably fast exposure.

This is a black and white photograph of a girl and a younger boy with several of their toys - a doll, a barrow, and a games racquet. Both children have hats and coats; the girl is wearing knitted gloves and the boy is still in ’skirts’.

Bielside House was the home of the Annandale family from the middle 1860s and several generations made it their home. The family owned, amongst others, the nearby Beltonford Paper Works, which was in operation until 1892.
