Fishergirl's costume
This costume is modelled on the traditional apparel worn by the women of Scottish East Coast fishing communities. Fishwives in their distinctive costume were a familiar sight in the streets of many towns, the last working into the 1950s.
This is a girl’s costume made of mixed textiles. It comprises a floral print blouse with a ribbon tie at the neck, a lined, red and white striped skirt and a full blue and white striped apron with a broad hem.
From the middle of the nineteenth century Fisherrow folk had been accustomed to follow the herring from north to south down the North Sea, so their return was marked as a holiday. The Fisherrow Fishermen’s Walk held every September grew from this tradition. Whole families took part, each participant being dressed in appropriate costume.
