Home Guard, WW1
This gentleman has been photographed wearing his Home Guard uniform.
This is a black and white three quarter length photograph of a man in uniform. Text on the back of the photograph reads ‘A LOCAL MEMBER OF NORTH BERWICK HOME GUARD, 1st WORLD WAR 1914′.
During the First World War a Home Guard was organised of local men who were either too old to go to war, or were declared medically unfit to fight. The Guard gave the home front extra protection and allowed the men still at home to feel they were contributing to the war effort.
