Land Girl

The land girls that worked in East Lothian were housed in lodgings and farms across the county. Miss Ina Seaton was based at a hostel at Eaglescairnie farm.

This black and white portrait photograph is of Miss Ina Seaton. She is dressed in her land girl’s uniform, which consisted of a shirt, brown jumper, khaki dungarees, boots, hat and a dark brown overcoat.

The Women’s Land Army was formed in June 1939, to help combat the agricultural labour shortage, caused by men enlisting in the armed forces, at the outbreak World War II. Between eighty and ninety thousand women worked on farms up and down the country, many carrying out tasks they were unused to or untrained for. These women helped to ensure that vital domestic food supplies were available throughout the war years.
