Dunbar Provost's chain

This medal and chain was worn by the provost of Dunbar Town Council who was also a magistrate by virtue of his office. A provost (or mayor) was chosen from among the elected councillors and chaired the business meetings of the council.

A gold medal on a decorative chain of alternating links and shields, some of which are engraved. It hangs from a lion rampant badge and is decorated in relief with thistles, scrolling on the edge and an enamel badge of a three towered castle, surrounded by a band of text.

Until 1975, Dunbar was under the control of an elected Town Council. Over the years, regalia such as robes and chains of office were accumulated, usually by donation, for use on formal occasions. This chain was purchased during the tenure of Provost George Low, 1910-15.
