Musselburgh Junior Magistrate's Chain of Office, 1827

This medal was awarded by Musselburgh Town Council to James Miller, their junior magistrate in 1827, for him and his successors in office. It has an Edinburgh hallmark for 1826-7 and a maker’s mark AM (for Adam Mossman?).

This gold medal has a stepped edge and ring chain fixture; the face is inscribed in detail including PRESENTED BY THE TOWN COUNCIL TO JAMES MILLER and HIS SUCCESSOR IN OFFICE, dated 7TH MAY 1827. The reverse has the arms of Musselburgh and a hallmark.

The town councils of Royal Burghs accumulated dress and regalia over the course of the years. Sometimes these were donated, sometimes (as here) they awarded insignia to themselves.
