East Lothian Photographers LOVE Wikipedia
For photographs taken as part of an event for Wikipedia on Sunday 14th February 2010. Held at John Muir's Birthplace and Prestongrange Museum, visitors were encouraged to take photographs of the museums and their objects to include on Wikipedia. Flickr Commons
A place for the Commons Community to share and discuss the truly awesome collections being made available in the Flickr Commons In this group: The Commons Institution List: links to Commons pages and group topics Introductions ---------------------- About the Flickr Commons (text from The Commons)
"The key goals of The Commons on Flickr are to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world's public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer. You're invited to help describe the photographs you discover in The Commons on Flickr, either by adding tags or leaving comments."
"The Commons was launched on January 16 2008, when we released our pilot project in partnership with The Library of Congress. Both Flickr and the Library were overwhelmed by the positive response to the project! Thank you! The program has two main objectives: 1. To increase access to publicly-held photography collections, and 2. To provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge. (Then watch what happens when they do!)"The Group Pool This topic is still under discussion, but for now members are welcome to post images if they relate to the Commons. Do you have a mash-up or collage that you made from Commons' photos? Do you have a photo that helps explain an image in the Commons? Perhaps a "then and now"? If you could add a html link to the Commons image or the discussion thread they pertain to, that would be excellent. If you'd like to see some examples of how other people are linking their photos to the Commons, have a look in our many threads and check out some of the projects going on there. Please do not use the pool simply to promote unrelated images from your stream; but please do show us how you interact with the Commons. The Blog If you want to keep an overview of what's going on in The Commons, as well as some of the projects being created in this group have a look at the blog:

OurEastLothian
The OurEastLothian group collects pictures and personal stories about the East Lothian area in Scotland. If you have a photograph of East Lothian and would like to share it, or a story which goes with it, ask to become a member of our group, then you can start posting! Our East Lothian is part of a wider project, run by East Lothian Museums Service (www.eastlothianmuseums.org), which intends to help people to collect their photos and stories and share them online. The project is funded by the European Programme “Grundtvig Learning Partnerships” .
Prestongrange
This group aims to collect photographs about the area known as Prestongrange. Photographs can be of the site as a museum, or in its previous life as a busy industrial area. Prestongrange is a site of major importance in the story of Scotland's Industrial Revolution. It was the location of a sixteenth century harbour, a seventeenth century glass works, eighteenth and nineteenth century potteries and a nineteenth/twentieth century coal mine and brick works. Remnants of these former industries can still be seen, and many of the structures are still intact including the rare Hoffman Kiln built in 1927 and the Cornish Beam Engine, unique in Scotland as it the only beam engine still on the site where it worked.
Scotland’s Industrious Past

Worthies !: Fine Art Portraits of Public Places & Unknown Spaces
May the best be here honoured, and the forgottten here remembered! . . . . . . . . . . . .
History awaits us [.]!! ~ Welcome here ...
. . . . . . . .
We invite you all -- photographers, councillors, Gallery Directors, historians, Art teachers, off-duty or
amateur librarians, Art assistants, etc. -- to help us assemble a colour photographic collection of the
quality oil paintings in our collective care or possession, or which are known to us, plus to develop a
comprehensive and updateable online List of quality portaits of "Worthies" in each community
and region, along with notable historic, personal, and artistic details, as available.
. If you have some quality colour digital images to hand of the men and women we refer to as "Worthies", we invite you to join our "Worthies ... !: Fine Art Portraits of Public Places or Unknown Spaces" group. Additionally, if you have a List of Portraits in your region, we would love you to post this in our Discussions.
However, if an unusual image seems relevant, please send it in. If it is not suitable -- perhaps too informal, then we shall not accept it. Have you found a quality, most likely formal head and shoulders, or full-length portrait [oils preferred], patiently mouldering in some largely ignored Gallery or Corporation corridor of city, town, or village Hall, or hidden away in some little-noticed Assembly Room, Board Room, etc.? If so, share your discovery here with a well-lit and nicely focussed photo of your 'find'. Invite images of others with our INVITE code [below].
WORTHIES EXPECTS YOU TO BE ACTIVE -- TO BUILD A "WORTHY" & GOOD LIFE!!!
Far too many such portraits remain relatively unknown. Internet searches do not as yet provide images or information of their existence. We aim to change all this! While many preserved hints clearly reveal that certain named portraits may be found in such locations, few of these portraits have yet received digital photographic attention. What an exciting challenge for keen photographers with talent!!!
This is a great opportunity for those whose specialty is in indoor still-life photographic images. More exciting still ... some of those neglected Community portrait images may be by respected and renowned celebrated artists! -- So rest assured ... our "Worthies" project has real potential to provide excellent professional engagements for some of you -- if you will formally suggest of the various Archivists of Borough Councils, Guildhalls, etc., that they employ your services as a quality still-life and / or live portrait photographer, to capture and preserve the images of all their new living heroes by a great portrait photographer, and/ or capture those historic heros on the corridor walls whose images need duplication, to share and deliver your evidence in photos of so many formerly missing and previously 'lost' past leaders! It all adds up to make you too, a "Worthy" portrait photographer.

If you have never ventured forth with camera to explore the local corridors of power, here's a group just begging to showcase your still-life studies of Local Historical portraits, to help your finest photography of the 'worthy-of-fame' to be better noticed!!!

HOWEVER, BEYOND PHOTOGRAPHY ~ WE INVITE ALL TO QUEST AND DISCOVER OLD PORTRAITS WHICH AWAIT A NEW TIME OF FAME AND RENOWN
This is an informal Questing group -- for active volunteer Art Portrait seekers -- to enable all to collectively help build an online Registry of Portraits -- of the Leaders, and Living-legends of Yester-year -- from the Corridors of Civic authority, of City, Guild, Town or Community Hall, or Institute, Association, or other Public, semi-public or private site -- of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Isle of Man, or Channel Isles, or other nations with a similar focus on the democratic themes of freedom of speech, open and transparent government, sustainable environment care, mature financial and business responsibility, plus humanitarian social considerations, including equality for women, quality public health and education, support for the disadvantaged, community service, volunteerism, charity, goodwill, fundraising and aid, and various other lifestyle improvement programs. From such bodies we seek mainly official and semi-formal portraits.
If you would like to "Quest", with us -- like Harry, Hermione and Ron, etc. -- for lost Art Portraits, then be sure to introduce yourself politely, and to:
a] add comments,
b] share photos of your own historic portraits of ancestors or hometown heroes, or civic local "Worthies",
c] add relevant 'Location' shots to build reality to our clues
d] add other images and ideas which could help us to find these works.
PLEASE BE ACTIVE ~ MOVE INTO FOCUS ~ LEARN TO PARTICIPATE

There's no time to hide in the shadows, or be 'camera shy' or 'reluctant', now ... We must all lift ourselves up to achieve our best. -- So please -- not a single passive member. MAKE THE EFFORT ~ SPEAK ~ BECOME FLUENT IN ENGLISH!!! No lurkers! -- Lurkers don't help build a group's mutually bonded activity. SO please act like a super-sleuth, or a trainee sleuth!!! -
First, get to know and understand the amazing history wiithin any portrait you share. ... Prepare a short history to share with us.
. Please exhibit your own long-forgotten celebrities here.
. Share their stories.
. Present your images with as much background as you can dig up, or care-to-share.
. Learn with us how to engage all your super-sleuth skills. Team up with likeminded researcher-photographers. [Invest in this process, to build your skills.]
