Education Return, Free Church Congregational School, 1852

Of the 106 pupils in regular attendance, half are only being taught to read. Note that each part of the curriculum has a fee attached to it - Reading 2/6 per quarter (12½p), Writing, Arithmetic and Geography a further 4/6 (22½p), Latin 6/6 (32½p). At this time a clerk in an office would earn about 60p per week, and a semi-skilled worker about 85p.
