House at top of Coal Neuk

Coal Neuk runs north off Bridge Street, on the east side of Tranent. Number 1 Coal Neuk formed part of a block of eight houses built by Edinburgh Collieries Company Limited to alleviate the problem of lack of housing for miners in the ever expanding mining operations in Tranent. After twentieth century nationalisation of the coal industry, the National Coal Board acquired the properties, but they were deemed uninhabitable and demolished in the 1940s.
