Works Department motor van By 1947 the Tranent Co-operative Society owned 66 sets of premises in the Tranent area with an annual turnover of £1,175,000. Although the 20 or so shops were central to the venture there were many essential but subsidiary departments. One of these was the Works Department which included the services of joiners, blacksmiths, painters and builders. The Works Department was necessary because the Society owned so many premises, from extensive glass houses to housing for managers and assistants. All this required upkeep and maintenance and the Works Department provided this service. |
