Horsedrawn bakery van and driver

Each branch of the Tranent Co-operative Society had a bakery section, supplied by the 'Store Bakery' situated on Church Street. Bakery employees were motivated to work hard because their wages were determined by how many bags of flour were used. In 1920 the rate was 8s 2d per bag. Bakery goods were distributed by the Society's own transport and by 1945 there were 27 vans delivering bread and groceries. Some vans were motorised, others horse drawn but all had a driver who would sell the produce at the same prices as the shops. As with the Bakers van drivers were motivated to work hard because their wages were determined by the takings from the van, these were generous and amounted to 3% of the van's takings in 1945.
