Tranent Parish Church communion token, 1861

To be entitled to receive communion, members of the congregation had to present a token. Each church had its own communion tokens, and periodically new sets were acquired. They were made of lead or lead alloy, with a design stamped on them. The designs usually included the date of manufacture and a mark or text to identify the church. Often from the early nineteenth century onwards, they also included the biblical quotation This do in remembrance of me.
