Wishart Church In January 1777, the Minute book of the Burgher Church opened, with the record of an application to the Presbytery of Edinburgh for the election of elders. Permission was granted and the Reverend John Brown was appointed to moderate in the election. Robert Sheriff won the contest and, from 1779, served for 41 years until his death in 1820. Sheriff was a popular minister, hence the increase in congregation numbers from the original 110 burghers, to c220 in 1809. To accommodate the increase in members, a church was built in 1834, at a cost of £1,463 16s. 8d., with a seating capacity of 637. After the Disruption of 1843, the congregation chose the name Wishart, in order to differentiate their United Free church from St. Andrew's United Free church. When the churches finally united in 1937, the name was changed again to Wishart-St.Andrew's. Not only did the church undergo many name changes, the structure of the building was frequently altered. The interior was renovated in 1896, to remove the side galleries and shorten the rear gallery, forming a hall. The pulpit area was later altered and in 1961, when the church was re-decorated, more structural repairs were carried out. Ultimately, the building became the Parish Church Hall. |
