[ Punch Bowl made for Musselburgh Town Council, 1822 ]

[ Inscription on base of bowl ]

Punch Bowl

This bowl was made in 1822 at the Newbigging Pottery, Musselburgh, of William Reid. It is one of very few marked and dated pieces known from this pottery and is of very fine quality, perhaps made to coincide with an important civic event because it displays Musselburgh's arms. Reid was born in Prestonpans and trained as a potter. He worked at Bo'ness and West Pans before setting up his own pottery at Musselburgh during the first part of the nineteenth century. This bowl was gifted to the town in the early twentieth century.
