Haddington Gardeners Society jugs

These jugs were made for the Ancient Fraternity of Free Gardeners of East Lothian. The Haddington based society was originally an association of practising gardeners but operated later as a conventional friendly society: subscriptions were used to support the Fraternity's sick and pensioner members. They were, however, one of the oldest such groups in Scotland (records commence in 1676) and accumulated memorabilia such as these jugs. When the Society wound up in 1953 the surviving pieces were distributed amongst the remaining members.
