Pair of silver goblets

The text inscribed on these goblets describes their purpose: PRESENTED BY THE MAGISTRATES AND TOWN COUNCIL OF MUSSELBURGH TO MR JAMES STEWART AS A MARK OF RESPECT FOR HIS ENDEAVOURS TO IMPROVE THE TOWN BY THE PLANTING OF TREES AND SHRUBS GIFTED BY HIS MASTER SIR JOHN HOPE BART 29TH SEPT 1829. Several presentation and ceremonial pieces were commissioned at Musselburgh in the Georgian period. In addition to these goblets, badges for the bailies (magistrates) and ceramics with the town crest are known.
