Miner's Tally Lamp

Tallow lamps (commonly known as "tally lamps") like this were used throughout the nineteenth century. They used animal fat or vegetable oil, and burnt with an open flame. The hook fitted into the miner's cloth cap.

The lamps could be made by any local tinsmith. This particular lamp was made in Dalkeith.
