Prestonpans plate

This cabbage leaf plate was manufactured in Prestonpans by Belfield & Company. It dates from the mid-nineteenth century.

Charles Belfield established a pottery in Prestonpans in the 1830s. Prestonpans was an early centre of industrial ceramics in Scotland. At one time there were several potteries in the town and nearby making everything from stoneware bottles to fine domestic wares and decorative items.
