PhotographThis photograph of Susan Yorkston, nee Brown, was taken by Robert Conquer. Susan married John Yorkston, a farm labourer and grieve on East Lothian farms. Cartes-de-visite were introduced into Britain from France in the 1840s, beginning a new era in popular photography. Local studios and itinerant photographers ensured availablity across the UK. The carte became so popular that by the 1860s between three and four million were sold. The craze was referred to as cartomania. |
