Weights and measuresUK weights and measures have been standardised by Royal Ordinance since medieval times. Standard weights and measured are used to check that shops and merchants are not cheating their customers (or being cheated themselves). Each of the Royal Burghs had their own set of the official standards. This is Haddington's imperial gallon measure. It is made of brass. This measure comes from a complete set from the Burgh of Haddington. The set is dated 1707, just after the Act of Union. The initials "AR" stand for Anna Regina: Queen Anne. |
