Punch bowlThis bowl was made to order for the Town Council of Musselburgh at the Newbigging pottery of William Reid. It is one of very few marked and dated pieces known and is of very fine quality, perhaps made to coincide with an important civic event. The bowl was moulded with a basket weave exterior and plaques with the arms of Musselburgh. The potter's signature and the date of manufacture can be seen on the base - click on the button below. William Reid trained as a potter at West Pans and set up his own pottery at Newbigging in the early part of the nineteenth century. |
