Volunteering at East Lothian Museums
East Lothian Museums are currently looking for volunteers to assist with a number of projects across the service.
Current projects our volunteers are involved with include:
- Cataloguing our extensive postcard collection
- Researching the history of Coal Mining at Prestongrange
- Accessioning recently donated objects
- Auditing and researching our coin collection
Our Collections
Our collections comprise some 25,000 items, ranging from steam locomotives to fine art, and including local archaeology, ceramics, textiles and costume, natural history specimens, as well as objects illustrating domestic, working and community life. Of particular importance are the Cornish Beam Engine at Prestongrange Museum, the Haddington Weavers and Craighall Friendly Society banners and a collection of stone anchors. As a volunteer, you could be involved in:

- Education and Access
- Exhibitions

- Research
- Marketing and Evaluation
- Web and ICT Development
We will be able to offer you the chance to learn new skills, to gain work experience within the museum sector, and to meet new people.

Our East Lothian
What memories does this photograph evoke?
Memories and stories bring our collections to life and now East Lothian Museums are aiming to capture these memories for future generations.
Our East Lothian is a website where people can share their pictures and stories of life in East Lothian, both today and in the past. The pictures may be copies of old family photographs, or pictures of objects and places, the important thing is to tell the story that go with the picture.
Get involved!
You can see a selection of photographs now on the Our East Lothian page on Flickr, the photo-sharing website. You can also upload your own photographs of East Lothian. Ideally we would like to recruit volunteers who would be interested in uploading photographs and capturing the memories behind them. We would offer training and support and would cover all your travel expenses so if you are interested please get in touch.
