PODCASTING

Our new podcasting project is under way.   Though we've done MP3 recording in the past (both as part of our Prestongrange audio tour, and for Scran), we now have the hardware and software to record anywhere and turn our recordings into podcasts.  Thanks to a grant from the Scottish Museums Council, we now have a portable recording studio, consisting of a laptop, a mic and some headphones.  We also have some new MP3 players to listen to all the new content we're going to create in the coming months.

What is podcasting?

Podcasting is when you regularly update your MP3 audio (or MP4 video) content (whether it's interviews, reminiscences, exhibition guides...) and then make it available via syndication.  Users can then subscribe to your syndicated content through a feed-reader or content aggregator, which automatically tells them when new content is available.  Despite the name, you don't need an I-Pod to receive podcasts, or any Apple products for that matter.  You can download podcasts to your computer, your MP3 player, or a suitably equipped PDA or mobile phone.

I'd like to try out this podcasting thing.  How do I do it?

A quick guide to podcasting and some links to useful free software is available here.

Alternatively, if you're based in East Lothian, you can try out our equipment, and we can show you how to make a podcast.  Contact Sarah Cowie, Museums Education Officer for more info.

In addition, we're always looking for interesting projects and partners.  If you'd like to get on board, contact us.

Our podcasts, videocasts and downloads

Keep checking back here regularly, as we will keep adding downloads and content to the site. Or, why not take advantage of our syndicated feeds?

What is a feed?

Rather than having to keep checking a page to see if it's been updated, you can subscribe to a page and a "news aggregator" will automatically check for you and notify you when new content has been added. It's a bit like subscribing to a newspaper and having it delivered to your door.

Many web browsers and e-mail clients feature news aggregators that easily allow you to subscribe to content. Otherwise you can download stand-alone news aggregators such as Feedreader or Newsgator.

How do I subscribe to your feed?

Click on the link below, and our feed should be automatically added to your chosen news aggregator. You will then be notified when we add new stuff to our downloads page!
